Week 7: Internet Discussion

I am still waiting for my classmate’s feedback and review of my website so instead, this week, I will be discussing an interesting question that was raised during class. “What would you do if you encountered a fake or controversial post online?

There are no right or wrong answers to this question. Some people might choose to comment on them, some people might choose to report them. Personally, I am someone who would ignore those kinds of posts and move on with my day. Keep in mind that I am not a very active member of the online community. I do not participate in forums and I do not post a lot on my social media accounts. You can think of me as a lurker, someone who likes to lay low. I mainly use social media for its messaging functions. If I encountered a fake or controversial post online, I would simply ignore it. I personally do not have the time to argue with these people. It is especially difficult to reason with people behind the monitor. In addition, what good does it do for me? There is no benefit for me to waste my time dealing with these people and their posts. I also believe that majority of the times, the one making the post is looking to cause disruption and noise. They are looking for attention. By commenting and sharing the post, you are doing exactly what they want. You are driving traffic toward their post. Maybe it is just me. Maybe I am just indifferent. I just truly believe people should be spending more time with their families and friends instead of arguing with strangers online because their opinions differ from one another.

So what do you think? What would you do if you encountered a fake or controversial post online?
